Agago – A Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier went on a deadly shooting spree in Ngora East village, Paimol Sub-county, Agago district, killing three civilians and injuring two others in the early hours of October 20, 2024.
The suspect, Private Amenoy Bonny, 45, from the 01 Commando Battalion of the Special Forces Command (SFC), reportedly went on the rampage after a domestic dispute with his wife, Angom Betty, who fled from him. Capt. Edrin Mawanda, Public Information Officer for the 5th Infantry Division, confirmed the incident.
"It is alleged that the soldier, in a fit of rage, was looking for a man he believed had taken his wife," said Mawanda. "He shot indiscriminately, killing three and injuring two."
The victims have been identified as Apiyo Sunday, 21, Akidi Santino, 47, and Ajalo Florence, 16. The injured are Kidega Charles Kumakech, 47, and Apiyo Janet, 20, who were rushed to Dr. Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital Kalongo for treatment.
The UPDF expressed deep regret over the incident, condemning the actions of the soldier. "The leadership of the UPDF in the region regrets and condemns such an act of misconduct. We are fully committed to apprehending the suspect and ensuring justice is served," Mawanda added.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Dr. Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital for post-mortem.
A joint investigation by the UPDF and other security agencies is currently underway, while the soldier remains at large.
The community remains in shock as authorities continue the hunt for Private Amenoy Bonny, who hails from Ocini-Kamudini, Oyam district.
