Parliamentary Leaders in Acholi shows mixed reactions to the ongoing compensation of the Acholi war debt claimants' team that has kickstarted recently with some leaders citing tough conditions given by the government to access the cash.
Pader district woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Paska Menya Achiro has clearly pointed out that the program has begun, though, in some areas, the list of the beneficiaries is missing, like in Angagura sub-county, Pader district.
She added that they have contacted the Attorney General about the missing names, and they were told that the list will be worked on as early as possible to allow the missing persons also benefit.
She added that as Acholi MPs, they want a uniform amount of money for compensation of each cattle at 1 million shillings each, but earlier, the government had said they will pay each cattle at 600,000 shillings.
Gulu district Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Laker Sharon Balmoi has decried the tough measures put by the Attorney General in the recent verification of Cattle compensation
The new requirements for verification for cattle compensation include; Uganda Revenue Authority TIN number, a letter from sub-county security officers, village chairpersons, location of the Kraals, among many other things. Laker adds that some of these measures are very tough and the local communities cannot avail these data.
The government has earmarked 50billion shillings for the cattle compensation in the Acholi sub-region
Acholi war debt claimant association was established in 2005, the association with a membership of 30,000 people from the eight districts of Acholi, are demanding 37 trillion Shillings in compensation for their livestock lost during the National Resistance Army (NRA) five-year bush war led by President Yoweri Museveni.
