Cultural in Agago district have today launched an operation in the fight towards the unending environmental degradation through charcoal business in Lacek-otoo village, Omiya Pacwa sub-county in Agago district despite several bylaws put into place by the cultural institution and the government.
Over 30 delegates from the Acholi cultural institution in Agago district are in the operation following the clarity from the Agago Resident district commissioner’s office aimed at stopping the ongoing charcoal burning in Agago district.
Rwot Casemiro Ongom, coordinator of clan leaders in Agago district says they have discovered a number of shea nut trees cut down for charcoal business and over 2,000 bags of charcoal. He added that two suspects, one known as Master and a driver of a Fuso truck under registration number UAY 185W have been detained following the operation in Adilang. These bags of charcoal will be burnt following the alleged rotten system in the police that has been reported by some district officials that they always pick confiscated items for their own use, Ongom added.

In April 2021, Police destroyed over 600 bags of charcoal in Agago in a crackdown against illegal charcoal burning from Rugu –rugu Village, Adilang Sub –County in Agago district.
In 2018, government under Section 29 (1&2) of the National Forestry and Tree Planting Act of 2003, suspended the cutting, transportation and sale of products of shea nut trees following its rapid destruction.
