Leaders in Acholi has cautioned parents to be cautious and support the girl-child education to fight rampant teenage pregnancies during the covid 19 pandemics since pupils are practising adultery.
In March 2020, schools were closed as the lockdown was imposed. Many girls returned to their homes.
According to a survey conducted between February and April 2021 by Comboni Samaritans of Gulu, the closure of schools exposed school girls between the ages of 12 and 17 to early pregnancy with more than 17,653 cases reported in the eight districts of Acholi.
A total of 640 girls got pregnant in Nwoya, 6,549 in Amuru, 3,855 in Omoro, 1,359 in Kitgum, 1,149 in Lamwo, 910 in Agago, and 920 in Pader.
Aryemo Esther, district education officer, Agago says school dropout is rampant hence leading to failure of the exams in the district. she adds that it's through education that our community can be elevated from poverty and curb down teenage pregnancies.
Meanwhile, Balmoi Sharon Lakot, a woman member of parliament for Gulu district urges parents to pull up their socks majorly on the girl-child education since there is low turn up for girls in schools and teenage pregnancies crippling the growth and development of girls.
