Locals in Pader district are decrying alleged drug hoarding practices done by the village health teams (VHTs) who tend to either sell or hoard drugs given to them to help locals at the grassroots in curbing down minor life-threatening diseases.
Ogen-rwot Richard, a resident of Gabadin village, Puranga Sub County says that some of the village health team members have started selling and hoarding government donated drugs that should benefit the locals. He added that some of the VHTs don't know how to prescribe drugs to the sick and this calls for immediate intervention from the district health department.
One village health team worker on anonymity says that it’s true and very unfortunate that the other members of the village health team workers are hoarding and selling the drugs given by the government to aid in the fight against infections. She added that last year it was got during an investigation done by the people from the ministry of health that some people are misusing the drugs given to them.
Meanwhile, acting district health officer, Hannah Apiyo says that if there is such a complaint, they will easily trap the alleged drug hoarding and selling among the VHTs.
Connections will be made to respective health assistants to find the issue and iron it out. Acting DHO - Pader, Apiyo Hannah.
