Pader District Leaders Back Teachers' Industrial Striking

Section of Pader district leaders have Saturday, 25th June 2022 expressed support for the teachers over their ongoing industrial actions because teachers have suffered, and endured enough among others amidst their low pay.

Paiula sub-county councilor V, Mr. Balex Okello expressed his disappointment with the government upon increasing the salary for science teachers leaving arts that, the increment will cause division in schools among the teachers.

According to Okello, teachers have been intimidated and frustrated majorly by high-profile politicians such as members of parliaments, and ministers, among others.

"The government should consider the headship roles because a class teacher who teaches science cannot earn more than the headteacher because he/she teaches arts," Okello added.

Pader town council urban chairperson III, Fearless Kilama Wod-Acholi blamed the strike on the poor governance that the government has failed to institute the minimum wage.

He urged government officers such as RDCs to go slow without intimidating the teachers.

Meanwhile, David Lam Komekech, the Pader district education secretary defended teachers by saying that the district leadership is with the teachers, but should strike and teach according to their salary scale.

He alleges that the strikes might lead to a high poverty gap as the poor people will fail to send their kids to private schools, while the rich’s children will continue learning.
