Pader district has recorded a total of 1,123 teenage pregnancies for the period of six months from January 2021 to June 2021 among the communities during the lockdown period when schools were closed due to covid-19.
Data collected from 11 sub-counties and 3 town councils shows that the highest number of teenage pregnancies has been recorded in Pajule town council which has recorded a total of 165 cases compared to the least Atanga sub-county with only 6 cases recorded.
The highest number of cases recorded was in March with 236, the majority of whom are aged 15 to 19years old
Okello Tito Brilliant, Pajule town council chairperson says that though the data shows that the number is high, he is aware that the neighbouring sub-counties also attend to services of the health centre in Pajule town council.
Brilliant added that the increase in teenage pregnancies is due to lockdown imposed and closure of schools. He adds that the parents should guide and talk to their children about the dangers of love affairs among teenagers.
Meanwhile, David Okech, senior probation officer attributes the increase in the number of teenage pregnancies to lack of parental guidance and impacts of lockdown.
