Police in Pader District is investigating circumstances under which a police officer shot at a 53-year-old man while enforcing Covid-19 guidelines.
A police officer at the rank of a special police constable of Pajule police station in Pader District allegedly shot at Odong Cisto, a resident of Pajule Sub- County on July 17.
According to Aswa River region police spokesperson ASP Ongom David Mudong, the incident happened at around 2:30 pm.
ASP Ongom also said the shooting happened at Amoko East Village, Palenga parish, Pajuke Sub-County in Pajule.
“It's alleged that two officers, Mwalimu Patrick with registration number 2818 and Oyet Richard with 52392, from Pajule police station proceeded to Amoko East Village to enforce directives on the standard operating procedures. On arrival, they were met by a group of people in a saloon who were not following the directives given by the president and arrested one who was not wearing a face mask and this made the public plead for the release but in vain hence attracting insults which made SPC, Mwalimu Patrick to fire a bullet that hit one person on the leg, later Richard Oyet was left at the mercy of the locals who beat him to comma,” he said on Sunday.
The two victims were rushed to Pajule health centre IV.
“The incident has been registered at Pader Central Police Station (CPS) under REF 12/17/07/2021 and Mwalimu Patrick charged with attempted murder. The two officers went and conducted illegal enforcement without directives from their immediate boss with one officer being a deserter who previously worked during the campaign period,” ASP Ongom explained.
“We shall closely investigate and the law will take its course,” he added.
