Retailers Hike Prices as Second Lockdown Hit Hard in Pader

Consumers in Pader district are in distress after retailers have begun hiking prices of goods and services during the second lockdown for reasons best known to them though companies and factories are reportedly not closed on directives given by the president.

James Ocira, a resident of Puranga sub-county says the retailers are hiking prices of most goods that are necessities for life such as; salt, sugar among many others. He added that salt was 700/=, but surprisingly it was increased to 1,200/= and this calls for intervention from the relevant authorities.

A retailer in Pader who preferred anonymity says that it’s a normal thing to increase the price of goods or services. He adds that factories are operating but the major issue here is the costs of transportation for the goods to reach the final consumers that remains high despite the cry from the final consumers.

According to Pader district deputy resident commissioner, Emmanuel Okware, Uganda is a free economy that one sells at the desired price. He adds that the district can’t intervene without proper assessment of the reasons behind the price increase of the goods until it’s done.
