Police have arrested an army officer attached to Banabana barracks for the alleged attempted murder in Madiopei town council Lamwo district on Wednesday, 15th February 2022 following a misunderstanding between him and a civilian.
It's alleged that, on 15/02/2022 at around 3:00am, a team of Police officers commanded by Officer in Charge of Madiopei Police station responded to gun shots heard around Arogo village, Kal Parish, Madiopei Town Council near Banabana Army barracks.
According to a police report, soldiers together with civilians were having a disco dance late in the night that resulted in a misunderstanding where one soldier at the disco dance developed a misunderstanding after he was allegedly assaulted by a civilian identified as Kica Emmanuel late in the night.
Witnesses at the scene who preferred anonymity alleges that Odera Ronald, an army officer shot at the victim injuring him in the stomach as the armed soldiers were escorting him to Madiopei Police station, and abandoned him in the nearby bush but was later evacuated by police to Kitgum Hospital where he is currently getting treatment.
ASP David Mudong Ongom Aswa-River Region Police Spokesperson said that a case of attempted Murder by Shooting is being investigated vide S.D Ref. 02/15/02/2022 at Madiopei Police Station in Lamwo District.
Mudong added that Statements are being recorded from key witnesses including from the suspect who is still in detention at Banabana Army barracks pending transportation to Madiopei police station for further investigation. He said that Police condemn the use of firearms against unarmed civilians.
Mudong further said that investigation has commenced, and a case file shall be submitted to Resident State Attorney for legal advice and once sanctioned, those found culpable shall face the long arm of law.
