Unknown Locals Alleged to be ASTU in Agago Accused of Theft, Extortion from Locals
Agago district leaders have on 19th April 2022, accused sections of locals believed to be anti-stock theft units of theft of animals and extortion of money from locals in the neighboring district that is invaded by the Karimojong rustlers when carrying out their tasks of preventing Karimojong from invasion.
The meeting was called by the district resident commissioner for Agago, Emmanuel Okot to handle the security matters arising from the cattle rustling by the Karimojong.
Mohamed Okwir, the Adilang sub-county chairperson has accused the district's top security officials of the illegal theft of animals by the ASTU who are stealing and making unnecessary arrests instead of protecting the locals’ properties.
He added that there are gaps that need to be filled in regards to security issues, particularly in his sub-county because there is little manpower to protect the locals, and deployment should be a hot cake in the community.
Meanwhile, Gunya Stephen Oloya, the Agago district chief administrative officer condemned the masquerading, extortions by the alleged locals. He said the district does not know about it and it’s illegal.
Oloya further urged locals of the affected places to report the matter to nearby police for proper investigations.
Emmanuel Okot, the Agago district resident commissioner stated the district security team will mount checkpoints to control increasing animal theft both by the locals and the Karimojong rustlers. He advised the local leaders to handle the culprits if arrested according to the law of the country upon investigations.
