Police in Lamwo district is investigating the circumstances under which one person was shot dead by the Uganda People Defense Forces (UPDF) on 29th June 2022 during their crackdown on a suspected group of south Sudanese armed warriors near Madiopei hills in Madiopei sub-county in Lamwo district.
The deceased had been identified as Robinson Owot, 24, a resident of Lucimidik Village, Lawiye-Oduny Parish, Madiopei Subcounty in Lamwo District.
it was revealed that on 29th June 2022 in the evening, Owot (the deceased) was shot on his after he allegedly took off upon interrogation by the UPDF to give his identity while on his way from South Sudan to Madiopei via Madiopei Hills at around 10:23 pm when he allegedly entered into the UPDF ambush.
The UPDF's mission was to curb the threats from the South Sudanese alleged plan attack to crossover to Madiopei with intentions to raid cattle.
ASP David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa river region police spokesperson said that it was upon that intelligence information about the planned attack, that prompted the UPDF soldiers from Banabana Detach within Madiopei Subcounty to deploy along the major suspected routes of entry and exit of the cattle rustlers.
Mudong added that the body of the deceased had been transferred to Madiopei HCIII for postmortem, and other relevant witnesses have recorded statements to aid in investigations.
Mudong said that no arrest has yet been made as inquiries are being conducted with a case of murder by shooting being registered at Madiopei police station under vide SD REF. 06/30/06/2022.
He further cautioned the members of the public to desist from late-night movements, especially in areas of Operations.
