36 years old man in Lira city has on Wednesday, 9th 2022 been sentenced for 60 years for the murder of his sister, and attempted murder of his sister’s husband over failure by his sister to clear the debt she owed her brother.
Denis Ogong, was sentenced in prison for 40 years for the murder of his sister, Silvia Amoli, and 20 years for the attempted murder of his sister's husband, Mathew Oweka.
State prosecutor, Anthony Okello told court that Ogong hired two men to murder his sister with a promise to pay them 5 million, but only paid shillings 1 million, and the two went and killed Amoli on the 9th April 2020. He added that Ogong was frustrated because of the failure by his sister to clear the debt she owed him.
Okello added that 10th April 2020 in the daytime, Ogong paid Ugx. 1 million and went to check on his sister if she was back. On the same day, two people were spotted at his sister’s place (Okello and Nyeko) leaving Ogong out, they entered into the deceased's house and executed the killing.
Lira high court judge, justice Jonathan Okello stated that this is not the first time for Ogong to commit an offense. He added that Ogong master minded his sister’s death, and deserves a life sentence.
Meanwhile, Ogong’s lawyer, Quirinos Oyugi Onono requested court to give a light sentence to his client since because the Ugandan constitution does not guarantee death penalty for the convicted persons.
Ogong requested the court to give him lighter sentence since he is the only breadwinner in the family, and he added that he is having health complications that need to be looked after.
While giving the final judgement, Lira high court judge, justice Duncan Gaswaga stated that punishment is to help the convict reform so that by the time he is free he can be a good person in the community.
Gaswaga gave 40 years for the murder of his sister, 2 years and more than 10 months spent on remand to be deducted and 20 years for the attempted murder of his sister's husband, Mathew Oweka. He added that Ogong can make an appeal through the Court of Appeal.
