27th January 2022.
A court in Pader district has today sentenced a 36-year-old man from Laguti sub county to one hundred twenty hours of community service and a fine of Ugx. 40,000 for domestic violence and burning his grass thatch hut.
Court heard that on January 20th 2022, while in Lamel Village, Lapyem parish, Laguti Sub County in Pader District, Okumu had a violent misunderstanding with his wife (Agenocan).
Atanga Town council Grade One Magistrate Kirumba Atwooki ruled that prosecution had proved that Joe Okumu aggrievedly harassed Pamela Agenocan and later burnt one of their two huts. He added that the community service will be done within Atanga town council premises for one hundred twenty (120) hours.
Prosecution adds that the accused then returned to his house from a bar while drunk, and set ablaze their owned house prompting Agenocan to report the matter to Laguti sub county police station.
Magistrate Atwooki, in his ruling, said basing on submission given by the suspect, shows he was guilty and deserved punishment.
However, because he had been very remorseful throughout the trial, on top of being on remand for days, the magistrate said a one hundred twenty hours sentence of community work is deterrent plus a communication to his clan head, and must pay his wife Ugx. 40,000 shillings.
Mr. Atwooki warned Okumu to refrain from making any further advances on his wife, warning of added punishments including six-month imprisonment.
