Pukor sub-county has passed a bylaw on 28th March 2022 that requires any business dealing with tree-cutting to provide 5,000 seedlings before a deal is reached, with the intention of protecting the green environment from global warming.

The 5,000 seedlings comprise 3,000 fruits seedlings and 2,000 seedlings for wood.

Richard Ojwini, Pukor sub-county chairperson said that the seedlings will be supplied upon successful licensing by the district focal people allowing you to do business. Ojwini said that the bylaw will also look at the indiscriminate tree-cutting by the locals.

Ojwini added that anybody found committing the crime will be fined Shs. 200,000 for each tree destroyed, and failure to do so will result in forceful implementation within ten working days. He said all leaders will be the implementors of the bylaw once blessed by the district council.

Martine Okello, Pader district forest officer confirmed the passing of the bylaw by the sub-county during the council meeting that he attended.

According to Okello, all sub-counties that are facing similar issues will adopt the bylaw once approved by the committee for production, natural resource, and community-based services will carry the scrutiny and later to the district council for blessing.
