Amuru District Police are hunting for suspects currently on the run after they were alleged to have burnt three grass-thatched huts in the night on Thursday, 31/03/2022 at around 11:00 pm.
The persons whose huts were burnt down have been identified as; Charles Oweka 30, Maurino Akidi 50, and Philip Okwera 60, all residents of Alii village, Alii parish, Layima sub-county in Amuru District.
The suspects included; Jimmy Oyugi, Atinya Otto, Simon Odong, Geoffrey Oyat, Julius Abe, Martin Ociti, Doctor Kidega, and Pilipo Ojok all from the Koch Padaca clan.
It's alleged that, on a fateful night, key suspects burnt grass thatched huts of the above complainants and a number of properties on allegations that Maurino Akidi, the wife of Philip Okwera bewitched their son Kereni Olok to death in 2021.
ASP David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Regional Police Spokesperson said that the Police were notified late about the incident, and the structures were not rescued. He added that the detectives rushed to the scene, documented it, and recorded statements from relevant witnesses to guide the investigation.
According to Mudong, no arrest has been made but efforts have been intensified to have the suspects apprehended for interrogation and subsequent prosecution in courts of law.
Mudong said that cases of arson have been preferred and registered at Amuru district central police station under vide CRB 129/2022.
He further cautioned the members of the public against using unlawful means to resolve their grievances especially by targeting vulnerable persons like the elderly.
